    Cascade County operates the detention center. Current county records confirm that the facility houses and transports detainees for federal agencies including ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

    A federal agreement also provides for the detention of certain people apprehended by Border Patrol while they await immigration-related processing or transfer.

    Confirm the Person Is Still in Great Falls

    Immigration custody can change quickly. Someone may be held at Cascade County Detention Center temporarily and later transferred elsewhere.

    • Whether the person is in ICE or other federal custody
    • Any recent transfer information

    Cascade County Is a Local Facility

    Cascade County Detention Center is not an ICE-owned processing center. It is a county-operated detention facility that also works with federal agencies. This distinction is important because different agencies may be involved.

    Great Falls and Cascade County fall within the area covered by the Helena location. However, the Helena ICE office is not Cascade County Detention Center.

    Do not travel to Helena simply because someone is detained in Great Falls unless ICE or the person's case information specifically directs you there.

    Immigration Court

    Do not assume the Immigration Court from the Cascade County Detention Center address. EOIR's current administrative-control information places the Helena DHS District Office within the Portland Immigration Court structure. Separately, certain Montana Department of Corrections matters fall within the Tacoma Immigration Court structure.

    Cascade County Detention Center is not specifically named in EOIR's current administrative-control list. Because assignments can also change after a transfer, use the person's official hearing notice, EOIR case information and most recent court notice to determine where the individual immigration case is being handled.

    Court record controls: Do not assume the court simply from the Great Falls detention address.

    If ICE or an Immigration Judge has already set an immigration bond, call with whatever information you have. You do not need to travel to Great Falls or Helena to begin the Amistad process.

    4. Verify whether the person is in ICE or another federal custody category.
    5. Do not assume the Immigration Court is located at the detention center.

    The county's public inmate roster does not include federal inmates, so someone in federal immigration custody may not appear in the regular county roster.
